FAQ
What is triathlon?
Triathlon combines swimming, cycling and running in a single event with no breaks between disciplines. The order is always swim-bike-run. Distances range from super sprint (swim 400m / bike 10km / run 2.5km) to Ironman (3.8km / 180km / 42.2km). Oslo and surroundings offer excellent training conditions for all three disciplines and hosts several triathlon competitions each year.
Where can I swim open water in Oslo?
Oslo has many good open-water swimming spots: Langoyene (ferry from Aker Brygge, open June-August), Sorenga Sjobad (central, free), Hvervenbukta and Ingierstrand (south of centre). For colder fjord swimming similar to Norseman style, the Oslofjord is accessible year-round. The Norwegian Triathlon Federation (triathlon.no) lists approved open-water swimming venues.
What are the best Oslo cycling routes for triathlon training?
For triathlon cycling around Oslo: Nordmarka (demanding, hills, good for strength), Vestmarka (slightly flatter, good for long rides), Lysaker-Sandvika (flatter, good for tempo sessions), E18 parallel route westward (asphalt, good for time trial training). For asphalt training the cycle path along the Oslofjord south of the centre is recommended. Avoid rush hour on busy roads - go early morning or weekends.
What equipment do I need for triathlon?
The minimum for triathlon: wetsuit (open-water swimming), bike (training bike accepted in recreational categories, but road bike is faster), cycling helmet (mandatory), running shoes. For Sprint and Olympic this is sufficient. For Half Ironman and Ironman recommended: trisuit, faster bike (TT bike or road bike), bike hydration system, carbon-plate running shoes. Equipment costs vary: entry level from 5,000 NOK (used bike + basics) to 50,000+ NOK for top models.
What is the difference between Norseman and a regular triathlon?
Norseman Xtreme Triathlon is Ironman-distance (3.8/180/42km) but in extreme Norwegian natural conditions: fjord swimming at 05:00 from a ferry in Eidfjord, cycling over the Hardangervidda plateau, and a final climb to Gaustatoppen (1,883m asl). Regular triathlon events (such as Sprint or Olympic in Oslo) are held on flat/moderate courses with support, feed stations and large participant numbers. Norseman has only 250 spots (lottery) and is only for specially dedicated athletes.
