The three stages
Swim — 3.8km
Jump from the ferry at 05:00 (official start). Dark, cold fjord water (14–18°C). Wetsuit required. Strong current possible near the pier. Complete stillness of the fjord landscape at dawn.
Tip: Practise open-water swimming in cold water months in advance. The ferry jump is mentally demanding.
Bike — 180km
3,500m elevation including the Hardangervidda plateau (1,200m asl). Extreme weather possible even in August: wind, rain, snow on the plateau. Support crew in car is mandatory.
Tip: Your support crew is critical here — food, clothing, motivation every 20–30km.
Run — 42km
The top ~160 runners reach Gaustatoppen summit (black T-shirt). Others finish in Rjukan (white T-shirt). Final ascent is extremely steep and technical.
Tip: The Gaustatoppen climb is 900m+ over 8km. Don't go out too fast.

FAQ
What is Norseman Xtreme Triathlon?
Norseman Xtreme Triathlon (XTRI) is an Ironman-distance triathlon (3.8km swim, 180km bike, 42km run) held in Eidfjord/Vestland, Norway, typically the first weekend of August. It is widely recognised as the world's toughest triathlon due to extreme geographical conditions: fjord swimming at dawn, cycling over the Hardangervidda plateau, and a final climb to Gaustatoppen summit (1,883m asl). Only approximately 250 participants are selected via an international lottery.
Who can enter Norseman?
Norseman is open to anyone who can document completion of an Ironman-distance race (3.8/180/42km) or equivalent distance. An approved support crew is mandatory — no crew means no participation. Entry is via an international lottery that typically opens in November and is extremely popular (thousands of applications for ~250 slots). Check nxtri.no for this year's application date.
What is the difference between black and white T-shirt?
Norseman has two finish lines: Gaustatoppen summit (black T-shirt) and Rjukan town centre (white T-shirt). The ~160 fastest runners who reach Gaustatoppen within the cut-off time receive the iconic black T-shirt — the ultimate Norseman badge. The rest finish in Rjukan and receive a white T-shirt. Both are legitimate Norseman finishes. The black T-shirt is considered one of the most coveted trophies in endurance sport.
What are the support crew requirements?
Norseman requires each participant to have at least one officially registered support crew member with a car. The crew vehicle follows the cyclist on the bike leg and the runner on the run leg. Crew can provide food, clothing, motivation, and medical support during the race. On the Gaustatoppen section, only two crew members per athlete are permitted. The crew is the single most critical factor for a good Norseman result — choose your crew carefully and brief them thoroughly.
What training is required for Norseman?
Norseman requires an extremely high level of fitness — it is not a starting point for a triathlon career. Recommended minimum standards: swim 4km without stopping, cycle 200km+ in a day (with elevation), run a marathon under 4.5 hours, and have experience from at least one Ironman-distance race. Typical preparation time: 12–18 months of structured training for most participants. Mental preparation is as important as physical.
