What is the best training programme for beginners?
For beginners without experience, full-body programmes (3 days/week) outperform split programmes (chest Monday, back Tuesday). They provide more frequency per muscle group early on, which is important for motor learning. After 8–12 weeks you can switch to a push/pull/legs approach.
How many training days per week is optimal?
Research points to 3–4 days per week as optimal for most non-professionals. The most important factor is consistency over months — a programme you follow 3 days/week for 6 months beats a 6-day programme you abandon after 3 weeks.
Can I combine running and strength training?
Yes, and it is recommended. Running and strength training complement each other: strength improves running economy and injury prevention, running improves cardiovascular endurance. Ideally do strength sessions on different days than long runs. Avoid heavy leg sessions the evening before a long run.
What are the best free training programmes online?
Reliable free resources: r/fitness (Reddit) Basic Beginner Programme — the best documented free gym programme. StrongLifts 5×5 for strength. Couch to 5K (C25K app) for running. Yoga With Adriene on YouTube for yoga. All free, no hidden costs.
How long does it take to see results?
Noticeable strength increase: 4–6 weeks. Visible body composition change: 8–16 weeks of consistent training + adjusted nutrition. Cardio improvement: 3–4 weeks. Patience is the most important factor — most people underestimate what 6 months of consistent training does.
Do I need a personal trainer?
A PT is valuable for the first 2–4 sessions to learn proper technique (especially squat, deadlift, bench press). After that, a good free programme is sufficient for most people. Oslo PT prices are NOK 500–1,200/hour. Some gyms like SATS and Evo include a free introductory session.
